India has surpassed China as the largest source of apparel imports into the United States for the first time since records began in 1989. Indian apparel accounts for 24.3% of US clothing imports versus China at 23.7%. The shift accelerated after 2018 tariffs and COVID supply chain disruptions. Major retailers including Walmart, Target, and Gap have formalised policies reducing Chinese sourcing concentration. For trading companies in textile supply chains, significant new opportunities are emerging in India while Chinese operations require strategic reassessment.
